BYTE Review
It wasn’t at all like the cavernous concrete clubs I’m used to. The main floor is small and bathed in pink light, featuring fetish videos, go-go dancers, and a DJ playing 80s hits, electroclash, and accessible EBM like Covenant. The upper patio level is just gorgeous, with tropical plants, a fountain and koi pond, and a retractable roof. I was to DJ on the lower level, which has a stage and the most space to dance. After checking things out we met up with Lucien. It was really funny, because Emily has known him for years, but he had no idea that she was my cousin. We gave him such a shock by showing up together! Lucien: “I feel like I’ve been punked! I’m waiting for Aston Kutcher to pop out!” It was still an hour before doors opening, so we went up to the patio where Voltaire was officiating a marriage. No joke! It was very sweet. There was also BBQ and cupcakes so of course we had to partake, hehe. We crashed a goth wedding party! 😮 Seeing Voltaire entertaining two little boys after the wedding was pretty priceless too. Goth babysitter!
9:00 – 10:00 was pretty dead, so Lucien put on a compilation CD downstairs. He spun some good 90s industrial for an hour after that. Dancing to “Hollow Ground” by Noise Unit makes me happy in my pants! I spun 11:00 to 12:00. The dancefloor was sparsely populated, but that was OK because it was still early. Delancey Lounge has a Rane mixer/CD player unit which was great overall. My main annoyance was that the play button was hard and I had to mash on it repeatedly to get the song going. I wish there would have been a BPM display, too. But those are minor problems which were easily overcome. They did have a killer sound system and an amazing lighting/video setup, though.
After that set I had some downtime, so I went upstairs to the restroom. Things got interesting when I was abducted by a towering 6’6″ flamboyant gay guy with a camera. He posed me in front of the go-go dancers and took about 256 pictures, encouraging me to “Work it girl, work it! Honey you look fabulous!” I was a little bemused but flattered, and decided to humor him for a bit. Then he asked me what I was wearing under my top. Me: “Er, a bra, why?” Him: “I want you to take off your top and pose for me.” Me: “Um, I’m DJing here tonight and I don’t think getting naked would be the most professional thing to do.” Him (hugging me): “Oh I’m so sorry! You’re right honey, you keep your clothes on!” Afdsdfdsdfdsgf. Ooootay! Stay tuned for a pic of me looking slightly confused next to a go-go dancer’s scantily clad booty.
My next set began at 2:00, after two bands played. By now it was packed and people were ready to dance. Everyone seemed the most receptive to the harder industrial I was playing, so I decided to stick to that genre for most of the night. Lots of people came up to me with smiles, requests and compliments, and I was really feeling the mixing and enjoying myself. The floor stayed full the whole time. I even got to spin more than my allocated hour because things were going so well 🙂 I couldn’t have been more pleased! I even got to meet Chris (I think?) from Life Cried – he came up to say hi because I was playing his band’s song. That was pretty neat! I also met some people that I had spotted at Freaks United IV. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, which I really appreciated.
I also had an amusing run-in with a pretty girl who first came up to me to ask about my UV-reactive eyeliner. Some people talk to the DJ to make a request, others talk to her for makeup advice! I told her the name of the brand, and she was absolutely delighted. Hehe. Later she gave me her purse and asked me to watch it for her. I thought nothing of it, and placed it next to my DJ case. She finally came to get it at the end of the night, and if she had been drunk before, she was totally sloshed now. She gushed rapturously about how I remembered her name, my DJing, and some incoherent things I couldn’t understand. She ended up kissing my hand and thanking me for being so wonderful. It was very sweet, but poor girl! She was not all there and really wobbly on her feet, so I hope she made it home OK.
The night ended at 4 and we said our goodbyes. I have to say that the Byte promotors were amazing and made me feel completely at home. All night they checked in with me to see if I needed anything and make sure I was having fun. They couldn’t have been nicer. So, many thanks to Marke, Chris, and Lucien. You guys rock! And I certainly won’t forget Marke (a bald black guy) waving a purple light-saber replica and shouting “No more fucking Mace Windu jokes!” ^_^

DJ Nurse Allison DJing Alchemy
I have been DJing as DJ Nurse Allison since 2002. After getting my start on the local public access radio station, I branched off into college radio and spinning at clubs across the East Coast. You may have caught my sets at industrial/goth/fetish events such as Alchemy in Washington DC, Ceremony in Pittsburgh, NEO in Chicago, or BYTE in New York City. These days I have largely hung up the headphones, but my heart still beats loud for any type of electronic music. This section of the site houses playlists and show fliers, as well as information on upcoming music events.
