Bunch of Mini Swatches – Pic Heavy!
When taking off my polish I like to play, so here are some one-finger swatches I just did. I used all of these. Follow the jump to see much much more!
The base coat here is NYC Hint of Mint, a cool mint creme. On top I layered two coats of each:
Thumb – Sinful Colors Hottie
Pointer – NYC Starry Silver Glitter
Middle – China Glaze Cracked Concrete
Ring – OPI White Shatter
Pinky – Prevail See You in Chelsea
Sinful Colors – Hottie
This polish contains 2 sizes of holographic glitter in a sheer blue base. Unlike some glitter polishes that contain a frustratingly tiny amount of pigment, you can get a formidable blue color with only two coats. It’s so sparkly and full of depth, and it didn’t dry super gritty like some glitters.
In sunlight, no top coat
Then I mattefied it using Essie Matte About You finish, and I’m in love. Next time I want mermaid nails this is what I’ll be using! So gorgeous.
NYC Starry Silver Glitter
It looks to be very similar to this Sally Hansen Hard as Nails glitter, which I spotted at Rite Aid. Anyone know if these are indeed dupes?
Yeahhhh, I was not feeling this at all. The microglitter was very starry and holographic, which the pictures don’t really portray. But the base was completely clear and the glitter was too sparse. I didn’t like how there were only a few big chunky blue and purple hexes hanging out. I had to do two coats and specifically pick big hexes out of the bottle (a pain in the arse) and place them around my nail so my nail looked uniformly covered. Maybe this would look better on a different background color – gunmetal? navy blue? – rather than mint. I might feel inspired and try that in the future, but for now I’m underwhelmed.
China Glaze Cracked Concrete
This lacquer is best applied expeditiously because it dries so fast. It has the smooth consistency that I’ve come to expect from China Glaze. There was no dragging or thickening like I’ve noticed with some of the other crackle polishes. I got some nice thick “fault lines” that showed off the base color nicely. It looks sweet mattefied, too – yes, I went matte crazy.
OPI White Shatter
I found this OPI shatter polish easy to paint on as long as I shook the bottle vigorously. The bottle tends to get a bit gunky inside, I guess because the polish starts drying inside whenever the brush is out. Crazy. Anyway, as you can see it crackles with a kind of ropey pattern, with some big breaks mixed in.
Matte is my friend
Prevail See You in Chelsea
True to its name, I bought this lovely in a Chelsea Duane Reade too, ha ha. I had never tried Prevail polishes before but this sweet seafoam green and turquoise blue duochrome caught my eye. There’s a bit of pinky-gold pearl in there for warmth, too. On it’s own it would need maybe 3 coats to build up some opacity and cover the nail line as it’s pretty sheer.
Mattefying this one actually took away from See You in Chelsea’s beauty, so we’ll skip that pic.
Thanks for reading!

Jewelry, art, music… and makeup! For me, these are all natural ways of expressing myself. The face is a canvas waiting to be enhanced, just like a blank sheet of sterling silver or clay. Here you’ll find an archive of my makeup looks and tutorials. For about 2 years I did my best to never repeat the same makeup (!!), so as you can imagine there are quite a few! I’m happy to answer any questions about how I created a look, product recommendations, etc.
From time to time I have makeup sales, which will also be posted here.
